Abstrakt

Reciprocating compressors are widely used in small capacity refrigeration systems due to their efficiency, reliability, and low cost. However, several factors can significantly reduce the mass flow rate supplied by the compressor to the system, thus reducing the cooling capacity. This paper presents a procedure to identify and quantify different sources of volumetric inefficiency, such as suction gas superheating, clearance volume, backflow in valves, and leakage through the piston-cylinder clearance. The procedure is applied in the analysis of a reciprocating compressor operating under various condensing and evaporating pressures. A simulation model has been used to generate data to illustrate the potential of the proposed detailed volumetric characterization. The results show that due to the backflow, volumetric efficiency does not follow a monotonic behavior with respect to evaporating and condensing pressures. The methodology presented proves to be a useful tool for characterizing compressors during their optimization process.
