Abstrakt

With three global megatrends: urbanization, climate change and energy crisis, the need for decarbonization and decoupling from natural gas is historically unmatched. Industrial Heat Pumps is one technology which has a great potential to provide process heat for the industry. First stage was the large scale applications such a district heating, data centers and some industrial processes, usually temperatures < 80-100°C and capacities in MWs-size. This first stage settled into a well-defined frame, the second stage is presently very interesting – decarbonizing medium size (< 1MW ) industries, requiring both cooling and heating. Once the technologies for these industrial applications up to 100°C are also at place, one will also see high(er) temperature applications served at temperatures >100 °C, with the aim to replace gas/oil boilers in the industry.

A lot of new developments in among others compressors for heat pumps as well as envelope extension investigations are undergoing. However, not without technical challenges. Each technology has its advantages and drawbacks, but there are some common challenges related to compressors for heat pump applications due to the higher temperatures and operational pattern compared to refrigeration: materials and lubrication related.

There are many technologies in the market. But selecting the best one means full application mapping of the industrial processes – cooling and heating, review available technologies/refrigerants/sizes, study best practices: safety, COP, installation cost, service, future proof, etc. and select the best solution for each application.

This paper will suggest a combination of layouts with scroll compressors for both cooling and heating < 100°C in a mid-size F&B factory of mid-size < 1MWth and analyze COPs of several refrigerants as well as swept volume representation of installation cost as index. Moreover, it will focus scroll development for high temperature applications and some of the problems which the authors have encountered and share solutions.
