Abstract
The Kigali amendment was adopted in October 2016. Even if there was a final consensus to phase down HFCs, some international decisions still need to be made in 2017 and 2018, and national plans regarding refrigerants must be reviewed and implemented.
Refrigeration can play a major role in reducing global warming, since reducing food losses reduces the carbon footprint of the food produced. Energy consumption resulting from food losses has a greater impact on the environment than the refrigeration equipment required to set up an effective cold chain. However, increasing needs for refrigeration may increase its environmental impact.
